Lice are divided into sucking lice and chewing lice. Sucking lice pierce the host's skin and feed on blood, while chewing lice feed on skin, feathers, or hair debris. They spend their entire life on a single host, cementing eggs (nits) to hairs or feathers. The eggs hatch into nymphs, which moult three times before adulthood, a process taking about four weeks. Humans host three species: head lice and body lice (subspecies of Pediculus humanus) and pubic lice (Pthirus pubis). Lice have been used as model organisms; the body louse has the smallest insect genome. The infraorder contains five parvorders: Amblycera, Anoplura, Rhynchophthirina, Ischnocera, and Trichodectera. The oldest confirmed fossil louse is from Cretaceous amber.
